Class Expectations
Permeating faith in all subjects and within our classroom really helped create a safe, caring environment. We created a class promise and friendship bracelets to help facilitate this and to show our love, respect, and positivity for one in another. We also held weekly classroom meetings. These were the foundation of our classroom and based on the virtues which we modelled and practiced with one another every day.
Christian Action Celebrations
Throughout the year at St.Paul, students learn about Christian Action Virtues such as honesty, perseverance, and respect. Along with learning about these virtues, it was important for me to model and set class expectations which included the Virtues, as this allows students to have meaningful relationships with one another and with God. Many of the pictures below demonstrate how students learned about and represented the Virtues in our grade four classroom and throughout the rest of the school.
Kindness "K"lub
With the help of my grade four students and other staff members I started a Kindness "K"lub for grade three and four students that met once a week during the lunch hour. Based on the beatitude: Blessed are the Peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God, we decided to do different things to show peace and kindness around St. Paul School. One project we worked on was writing positive notes and leaving them in library books for other students to find. Our year end project focused on giving back to the community. We decided to organize a book drive with money going to the Alberta Children's Hospital as one of the kindergarten students was in the hospital along with one our staff members new baby. With hundreds of donations and a book sale over one week students were able to raise over 600 dollars which we were able to donate.
Praying in Colour
At the beginning of the 2014/15 school year I was able to attend a professional development session called Praying in Colour. Along with a few teachers from my school and numerous others from around the district I was able to learn different ideas and strategies for incorporating artwork into group or personal prayer. We were able to try different activities during the session and I was able to bring them back and use them in my everyday teaching. Students really enjoyed making "prayer doodles" and we used them many times during the year while we were praying.
